What is modified atmosphere packaging?
Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) is a packaging technique in which the atmosphere inside the pack is modified using authorised packaging gases to help preserve the product’s characteristics and extend its storage life.
Unlike vacuum packaging, MAP does not simply remove air: a controlled atmosphere is maintained inside the package. Under EU food-labelling rules, foods whose durability has been extended using authorised packaging gases must carry the statement “packaged in a protective atmosphere.”
